Finish Your Basement for Smart Storage in Scituate

“Have you priced storage units lately?” Dakota asked. “It’s absolutely nuts how much they charge for what is basically an empty garage.” He shook his head. “My son has just been deployed for the second time, and paying on a storage unit for God knows how long is just not in his budget.”

Dakota had considered having a storage shed built on his Scituate property, but the way his property is situated makes that difficult. “Really the only place that’s ideal for building is directly in front of our house,” he explained, “and as you can imagine, my wife’s not thrilled with that idea.”

“So we got to talking about finishing the basement to stow Brad’s things,” Dakota explained. “I went down there and took a look around. It was dark and cold. The floor wasn’t very even and there was a lot of dirt and spiderwebs falling down from the floor joists. Brad has his computer equipment, a big tv, that sort of thing – this wasn’t really the ideal storage facility for him.”

He explored having the basement finished. “Having a Scituate basement finishing contractor put in a level floor, and some walls and lighting made a real difference,” Dakota explained. “At first I was worried that this would all be too expensive, but when you do the numbers and compare the cost of renting a storage unit month after month after month, it’s actually a smart financial decision.”

“Brad’s not going to be be deployed forever,” Dakota added. “Eventually we’ll be moving his stuff to his new place. Then we’ll have this nice finished basement with built in storage to get the rest of our lives organized. And that will be wonderful.”

Hingham Basement Remodel Idea: Give the Kids Some Room To Play

“We chose to live in Hingham because raising our children in a safe, nurturing community is important to us,” Lauren said. “It’s great to know the kids our kids are playing with. Whether that’s at T-ball in the spring or swimming in the summer, they’ve got a pack of friends wherever they go.”

Lauren’s family lives an exceptionally active lifestyle. “Between the three kids, it seems like someone’s always involved in something,” she said with a laugh. “But believe it or not, sometimes we have no place to go. And then the kids really have no place to go.” A long stretch of rainy weather had the kids climbing the walls in boredom, and the mother of three scratching her head for solutions.

“What we needed was a playroom for the kids,” she said. “Somewhere where they could go entertain themselves without getting under our feet. And of course I want to know they’re nearby and safe.” A friend recommended converting the family’s Hingham basement into a playroom. “I’d honestly never thought about the basement at all,” Lauren said, “but when I started doing some research, it turns out that finishing the basement made a lot of sense.”

One of the primary factors driving Lauren’s decision was cost. “We’re not exactly broke, but we do have three kids,” Lauren said with a laugh. “That means I have to be smart with every dollar. When I compared the costs of having a home addition built versus having the Hingham basement finishing company build a playroom for it, the saving were immediately apparent.”

As part of the basement finishing project, Lauren had some storage units built in to the new playroom. “Not only does this make getting everyone’s toys put away a snap, but now we’ve got a place for our holiday decorations and camping gear.” She smiled. “This has turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.”

Plymouth Basement Remodeling: For the Home Business

“The economy’s been tight, and it’s hit every sector, including mine,” said Deborah, who advises families in search of long term living situations for aging relatives. “For a while I was renting office space in Boston, but that became cost prohibitive very, very quickly. I met with a consultant, who pointed out that I met with the vast majority of my clients either over the phone or via video conference. In person  meetings happened maybe once or twice a quarter – and half of those took place at the client’s home.”

The consultant acknowledged that having a Boston address was prestigious, but asked Deborah if she was willing to pay thousands of dollars each year for that prestige. “Investing in creating a home office was an up-front expense,” Deborah said, “but over the long term, it made the most financial sense for my business.”

There was only one problem. Deborah’s Plymouth home didn’t have any available space for a home office. “I thought about converting the garage,” she said, “but it gets cold out there, and I hate being cold. Besides, my husband wasn’t thrilled with losing ‘his’ space for my business.”

“We looked into having the basement remodeled,” Deborah said. She’d had concerns about working next to the family’s sometimes noisy boiler, but the Plymouth basement finishing company had an answer for that. “The system they use has these wall panels that buffer the sound,” Deborah explained. “There’s an access panel built in so the boiler can be serviced as needed, but otherwise, I hardly know it’s there. I can hear it when it turns on, but let’s be real: I could hear the heat in my old office as well.”

Having her Plymouth basement remodeled enabled Deborah to reduce her business expenses significantly. “Not only did I save on rent,” she said, “but when you factor in the costs of commuting back and forth, and stopping to grab a coffee and lunch – all those things add up fast!” She didn’t have an exact number on how much she saved, but said, “When you figure that I’m going to be running this business for the foreseeable future, it’s clear the basement remodel more than paid for itself!”

Duxbury Basement Renovations: More Space = Happier Families

“When our kids were small, this house was a lot bigger,” Marie said with a laugh. The Duxbury mother of two is one of the busiest people you’ll ever meet: in addition to caring for her family, she’s a school teacher and actively involved with youth sports. “Even when we had everybody’s friends over here – which was more often than not – it seemed like we had enough space. But then the teenage years hit and things started to get a little crowded.”

“We thought about building an addition,” Marie explained. “A big family room that would give everyone space to hang out comfortably. But that meant losing most of our back yard, and I really enjoy that space.” As an alternative plan, Marie looked into having her Duxbury basement finished.

“Right away, it was clear that we could save a lot of money. The addition idea was all new construction. Finishing the basement, on the other hand, was simply renovating what we already had in place.” With one eye on the need to save money for her childrens’ college expenses, Marie decided to move forward with the idea.

“The basement finishing system makes having all the work done a real snap,” she said. “We met with the contractors and picked walls, flooring and lighting. There were a few issues in the basement that had to be addressed – we wanted to be sure we always had easy access to the boiler and electrical panel box – but that was easily taken care of.” Marie chose basement finishing materials that would stand up to the rigors of a group of teenagers hanging out. “It’s so nice to have my house back,” she said with a laugh. “I love having the home where all the neighborhood kids feel welcome. But I also enjoy being able to sit on the couch myself every now and then. Having the basement converted into a rec room was one of the smartest things we ever did!”

3 Reasons You Want to Turn Your Basement into a Private Gym

As Pembroke’s top basement finishing company, we’ve seen people create truly amazing, comfortable functional spaces out of their basements. Some families choose to turn their basements into home theaters, which is great if you love movies. Other people are using their basements to create additional living space, either for adult children or their parents – this is a practical, budget friendly way to make sure everyone has quiet and privacy.  And increasingly, people are turning their basements into private gyms. Here are three reasons you might want to think about doing that too:

  1. Work out when you want to: Having your basement turned into a private home gym means you’ve got 24/7 access, 365 days a year. Can’t sleep? You can work out at 3 am! Don’t worry about the nasty weather making commuting to the gym a pain – you’ve got your own workout facility conveniently at home.
  2. Work out with who you want to: Sometimes the people at the gym aren’t exactly nice. Skip the cliques and gym rat types who always have something ‘helpful’ to say by working out in your own private gym. Want to have your friends with you? It’s your house – invite them over! The gym is never crowded when it’s full of people you like.
  3. Save a ton of money. A gym membership can take a hefty chunk of change out of your bank account every  month. Having your basement transformed into a home gym isn’t exactly free, but it is an affordable one time expense. Afterward, you have a valuable asset that increases the comfort, enjoyment and value of your home.
