6 Ways Remodeling The Basement Can Help You Be Happier

Are you unhappy? Do you have a basement? It turns out that transforming underutilized basement space into attractive, functional spaces can have a positive impact on your mental health. We talked to Boston’s basement renovation specialists, and they identified half a dozen basement remodels that made their clients significantly happier:

  1. The Home Gym: Turning your basement into a home gym means you can work out in private, as often as you’d like, without any ‘helpful’ commentary or critique from gym rats who were apparently born with six pack abs and perfectly toned thighs. Saving money on gym membership is happy-making too: think of all the Milk Duds you could buy with that cash!
  2. The Home Theater: You know  what’s better than working out? Watching other people work out – or battle aliens – or fall in love. It doesn’t matter what kind of movies you like, the amazing home theater you have built in your basement is the absolutely best place to watch them. Cozy, private, and you are totally able to bring whatever snacks you’d like in with you.
  3. The Romantic Getaway: You know what’s even better than watching movies? Snuggling with your special someone. Obviously we can’t all ditch our kids and responsibilities every time we need a getaway – but sneaking downstairs for some private time is a much more appealing option when your  Boston basement finishing company has put in walls, flooring, and of course, flattering lighting.
  4. The Home Office: Maybe your special someone hasn’t shown up in your life yet. Maybe you’re over all that love stuff. We don’t know. But we do know that some people prefer work to romance. Whether you can’t keep yourself from bringing work home from the office or you’re fixing to launch a start up, keep your costs down and the convenience up by having your basement transformed into a home office.
  5. A Place for Your Kids to Stay: You thought the kids were going to grow up, go to college, get a job and move away? Maybe not so much – having the little ones around into their thirties is becoming increasingly the norm. Promote family harmony and boost your happiness level exponentially by introducing at least a little distance into the relationship. Remodeling the basement into an apartment for your kids (or parents!) means everyone’s got a place to be without being right on top of each other.
  6. The Study: Call it the Man Cave, or the Woman Cave, the Study or whatever you’d like: a private, comfy space filled with books, comfy furniture, and all the rest of your favorite things is one of life’s little pleasures. You don’t need a ton of space to have a good time. Your Boston basement renovation specialist can help you create the best room in the house. Give them a call today!

2016 Basement Renovation Trends

The New Year is almost here and we’re looking ahead to see what Boston homeowners are planning to do to their basements in the year to come. Innovative homeowners are willing to accept no limitations on their creativity: this year’s trends incorporate high tech, soundproofing and more!

Storage & living space top the list when it comes to reasons to remodel the Boston basement. When families get crowded out by too much stuff – or even by each other! – it’s time to give everyone some breathing room by renovating the basement. There’s nothing more convenient that having 24/7 access to your own secure storage unit: stow sporting equipment, holiday decorations and more in well-designed, mold-proof basement storage space. Converting the basement into a bedroom or apartment for older children, parents, or in-laws is another top trend.

Today’s homeowners enjoy using their bodies and their minds. Converting the basement to a home gym isn’t just for the Olympic athlete: it turns out getting fit is easier and enjoyable when you have an airy, comfortable private space to work out. Lots of people love music: some of the most innovative basement remodels include creating a home recording studio; another family soundproofed their basement remodel so their twin sons could practice playing the drums as often as they’d like to.

Some basement remodels are guided by the entrepreneurial spirit. Creating tech-friendly spaces to support a start up, converting the basement into a home office, or converting the basement into a studio or maker space are all options Boston homeowners have used to launch or grow their own businesses.

Holiday Guests Deliver Basement Remodeling Ideas

“Both of my husband’s adult children came and spent the holidays with us,” Sandra said. “That was a lot of fun, but it also made it clear we need a little more space around here if we’re going to entertain guests for any length of time. Our home just doesn’t have the space to smoothly accommodate another couple and their children for two or three days – and considering how far from Boston everyone lives, when they can come in, they’re going to be for that amount of time every time they visit!”

Renovating the basement to serve as a guest suite made good sense. “Everyone can be comfortable,” Sandra said. “It’s really nice down there. Our Boston basement finishing company completely did that space over. There’s new walls, new floors, new lighting – it’s bright and comfortable and warm. I’ll tell you a secret – when we don’t have guests, I like that room as my own private getaway. I go down there with a book or watch a movie on my iPad or whatever – you’ve heard of the Man Cave? Now it’s Mom’s turn!”

“We had the basement remodeled into a guest space,” Sandra said. “My best friend had a similar situation, except she has her adult children living with her on a more permanent basis. What was nice in that case is that the Boston basement remodeling company incorporated even more features into the new place – there’s a bathroom and a cute little kitchen built right in – while making sure everyone has the space necessary to be happy!”

The Best Basement Wall Finishing System for Active Boston Families

“We have three sons, Jeffrey, Miles, and Andrew,”  John said. “And they are non-stop. When I say they are always, always on the go, I mean it. They have so  much energy. They literally bounce off the walls. That’s why we decided to have the basement renovated into a play space for them – but I wanted to be sure that the walls could stand up to my active boys.”

There are numerous basement wall finishing systems available. However, they don’t all off the same level of durability and mold resistance. When comparing basement wall systems, it becomes clear that Kaks Wall is the only wall that is actually dent proof. Some other brands claim to be dent resistant; they may be able to stand up to an occasional knock here or there, but they’re just not made for life with very active young children.

“I appreciate the fact that Kaks Walls are stain and mold proof,” said Beth, the boys’ mother. “Miles and Andrew both have allergies, and I don’t need them being exposed to mold. Knowing that the walls are actually designed to stop mold growth in its tracks gives me tremendous peace of mind.”

“Durability, mold-resistance, and easy to clean were our top three criteria when it came time to choosing a basement wall system for our Boston home,” John said. “Kaks basement wall system excelled in all three areas, and it was extremely competitive price wise. Of all the decisions we’ve made in our home, this was definitely one of the best!”

Smart Storage Saves Money: Boston Basement Renovation

“Some families are super organized,” Rachel said with a smile. “We are not that family.” The Brownings, who live in Boston, have three children, two dogs, and a very active life style. Their oldest son in very involved in baseball, while the youngest has karate. “All of our stuff – sports gear, camping equipment, the stuff we take with us down to the shore – was jumbled together in the garage for like forever.”

Then, last summer, Rachel’s husband Clement couldn’t find the family’s tent. “You can’t go camping without a tent,” Rachel said, “and we’d already told the kids we were going. So we wound up buying another tent – which actually worked out great, it was a very nice tent, but it was not cheap! – in order to make that weekend happen.”

“Of course when we got back,” Clement said, “I found our first tent like that.” He snapped his fingers. “That’s when I said we’ve got to get our lives organized better.”

At first the Rachel and Clement thought they could fix the challenge by just straightening out the garage, but it quickly became clear that wasn’t the case. “Too, too much stuff and not enough space,” Rachel said. “Clement actually wanted to expand the garage but we didn’t have the budget for that.”

“Remodeling the basement into an organized, easy to access storage space made a lot more sense,” Clement said. “Some of the stuff we’re holding onto only gets used once or twice a year – holiday decorations, our beach chairs – so it doesn’t necessarily need to be in the garage.”

Working with a Boston basement remodeling company, Clement and Rachel created an organized storage space in their basement. “Simply having walls put up, with some shelving and storage units installed, has made so much difference,” Rachel said. “Now everything has a place to be. When we want something, we know exactly where it is – so we don’t get stuck having to buy replacements we don’t actually need. Being organized saves money.”
