A Boston Basement Finishing Contractor Who Listens

“When I first came up with the idea of transforming our Boston basement into a home office for my business, the contractor laughed at me,” Charlaine said. “I mean, ha-ha, right in my face. He told me the space was too dark, that it would never stay dry, and besides, what was I going to do about the furnace?” She shook her head. “The whole thing was so insulting that I actually gave up on my idea for a while.”

Then Charlaine saw what a Boston basement finishing company did in her friend’s home. “They’re both fitness fanatics,” she explained, “and they wanted their own home gym. So they had one built in their basement. Now, I have less than no interest in a gym, but I was definitely interested in having my basement transformed. I said to them, “You have to tell me who did this!”

The experience Charlaine had meeting with the Boston basement finishing contractor was much different. “It turns out that working with a company that specializes in transforming basements is a much better experience than trying to talk a general contractor into working on your basement. There’s a special skill set involved in installing flooring, walls, and lighting in the basement,” she explained. “Plus there are specific products used to stop mold and mildew from becoming an issue.”

Even more than the expertise, Charlaine valued the fact that her Boston basement finishing contractor really listened to her. “He didn’t tell me anything was impossible. Instead, he really delved into how I wanted to use the space, and what would make it work well for me. What a refreshing change!” Today, Charlaine spends three or four days a week working out of her basement office. “I certainly don’t miss the commute to the office,” she said, “and having this bright, airy office appear out of what was a cramped, dark basement was the best thing that could have happened to this space.”

Don’t Put Your Dreams On Hold!

“My Mother always wanted to paint,” Tina said. “But there was never any space for her, never any time – between the family and the shop and taking care of my Dad, a whole lifetime slipped away. Before she knew it she was in her eighties, and then she was gone. After we buried her, we were cleaning out her house and in her bedroom closet I found all these boxes of paint and brushes and stacks of canvases – things she’d planned to use and never did.” Tina took a deep breath. “So I signed up for a painting class. To keep her dream alive.”

Tina’s Boston home is on the small side, a situation complicated by the fact she has two children and her husband runs a business out of the home. “So if I was going to paint, I needed a place to be uninterrupted. That’s what gave me the idea of having the basement finished and turning that space into a studio.

Renovating the basement to serve as an art studio or other creative work space is an increasingly popular option in Boston. Painters, quilters, artists and crafters all need open space to do their favorite things; basements are chronically underutilized spaces in many homes. “Our basement had the usual things – the furnace and whatnot – and a few boxes of old papers. Once the basement finishing company put the walls up and the floor in it looked like an entirely new space,” Tina explained. “So bright and airy – I couldn’t wait to get in there and set up my easel.” Her first few paintings don’t exactly look like something you’d find in a gallery, “But I’ve had a lot of fun,” Tina said, “and I think that’s what Mom would have wanted.”

Your Top Questions About Basement Refinishing: Answered!

As Boston’s top basement refinishing company, we hear a lot of questions from homeowners considering transforming their underused basement space into comfortable, functional rooms. Here are some of the top inquiries:

#1: I’m worried my basement is so damp that mold & mildew will grow on any new walls or floors. Can you help?

Absolutely! When we work on a home, we use our innovative basement finishing system to create walls and floors that are both mold and mildew resistant. These aren’t the two-by-four and drywall walls you may be used to: these organic building materials are a feast for the nasty spores that turn into mold and mildew. Instead, after we’re done, you can enjoy your new basement knowing mold and mildew aren’t a concern for you.

#2: If you guys handle the basement walls and floors for us, do you know someone who can do the plumbing and electrical work?

We absolutely do – because we do the entire basement renovation job ourselves. Customer service is our top priority, and we think there’s nothing more frustrating than having to track down six or seven different professionals just to renovate your basement. Our total renovation packages mean all you have to do is show up and enjoy your new space – stress free and simple!

#3: We’ve heard horror stories about basement remodeling companies that quote one price, start the job, and then suddenly announce everything’s going to cost a whole lot more. Is that something we have to worry about if we choose you?

There are some bad apple contractors who do the best they can to give our industry a bad name. But we’re not like that! We guarantee our contracted price. You’re not going to pay any more than you agreed to pay for contracted items and labor. Sometimes homeowners decide to make changes to their plan mid-project; if that happens, we get everything in writing and let you know how much the new cost will be. Sometimes homes have unsuspected structural problems or other issues: in those instances, our commitment is to keep you fully informed and let you know what your options are before moving forward. There are never any financial surprises when you choose Kaks Basement Finishing & Design!

6 Ways Remodeling The Basement Can Help You Be Happier

Are you unhappy? Do you have a basement? It turns out that transforming underutilized basement space into attractive, functional spaces can have a positive impact on your mental health. We talked to Boston’s basement renovation specialists, and they identified half a dozen basement remodels that made their clients significantly happier:

  1. The Home Gym: Turning your basement into a home gym means you can work out in private, as often as you’d like, without any ‘helpful’ commentary or critique from gym rats who were apparently born with six pack abs and perfectly toned thighs. Saving money on gym membership is happy-making too: think of all the Milk Duds you could buy with that cash!
  2. The Home Theater: You know  what’s better than working out? Watching other people work out – or battle aliens – or fall in love. It doesn’t matter what kind of movies you like, the amazing home theater you have built in your basement is the absolutely best place to watch them. Cozy, private, and you are totally able to bring whatever snacks you’d like in with you.
  3. The Romantic Getaway: You know what’s even better than watching movies? Snuggling with your special someone. Obviously we can’t all ditch our kids and responsibilities every time we need a getaway – but sneaking downstairs for some private time is a much more appealing option when your  Boston basement finishing company has put in walls, flooring, and of course, flattering lighting.
  4. The Home Office: Maybe your special someone hasn’t shown up in your life yet. Maybe you’re over all that love stuff. We don’t know. But we do know that some people prefer work to romance. Whether you can’t keep yourself from bringing work home from the office or you’re fixing to launch a start up, keep your costs down and the convenience up by having your basement transformed into a home office.
  5. A Place for Your Kids to Stay: You thought the kids were going to grow up, go to college, get a job and move away? Maybe not so much – having the little ones around into their thirties is becoming increasingly the norm. Promote family harmony and boost your happiness level exponentially by introducing at least a little distance into the relationship. Remodeling the basement into an apartment for your kids (or parents!) means everyone’s got a place to be without being right on top of each other.
  6. The Study: Call it the Man Cave, or the Woman Cave, the Study or whatever you’d like: a private, comfy space filled with books, comfy furniture, and all the rest of your favorite things is one of life’s little pleasures. You don’t need a ton of space to have a good time. Your Boston basement renovation specialist can help you create the best room in the house. Give them a call today!

Holiday Guests Deliver Basement Remodeling Ideas

“Both of my husband’s adult children came and spent the holidays with us,” Sandra said. “That was a lot of fun, but it also made it clear we need a little more space around here if we’re going to entertain guests for any length of time. Our home just doesn’t have the space to smoothly accommodate another couple and their children for two or three days – and considering how far from Boston everyone lives, when they can come in, they’re going to be for that amount of time every time they visit!”

Renovating the basement to serve as a guest suite made good sense. “Everyone can be comfortable,” Sandra said. “It’s really nice down there. Our Boston basement finishing company completely did that space over. There’s new walls, new floors, new lighting – it’s bright and comfortable and warm. I’ll tell you a secret – when we don’t have guests, I like that room as my own private getaway. I go down there with a book or watch a movie on my iPad or whatever – you’ve heard of the Man Cave? Now it’s Mom’s turn!”

“We had the basement remodeled into a guest space,” Sandra said. “My best friend had a similar situation, except she has her adult children living with her on a more permanent basis. What was nice in that case is that the Boston basement remodeling company incorporated even more features into the new place – there’s a bathroom and a cute little kitchen built right in – while making sure everyone has the space necessary to be happy!”
