Scituate: Smart Storage Begins With Basement Finishing

“A place for everything and everything in its place, that’s why my Mother always said.” The Scituate mother of three looked up from the pile of boxes in front of her and laughed. “Of course, Mother never had this much stuff!” Shirley had started doing some specialty sewing for her friends, mostly repairs and alterations. “Before I knew it, I had a full fledged business on my hands,” she said.

Shirley had two goals with her basement renovation. “I want a nice open space where I can do my work,” she said, “but more important than that is storage.” The fabric, notions, and other materials Shirley uses in her tailoring business take up a lot of space, and finding one particular item amongst all the rest was difficult because her materials weren’t organized.

Your Scituate basement finishing company can work with you to create smart storage solutions for your family. There are many shelving, rack and cabinetry options that can be customized to your exact specifications.  “We found that by bringing some stuff down here, it really opened up a lot of the storage space that was being used upstairs,” Shirley explained. “All of a sudden, we had a place for the kids to put their coats and book bags again: it’s wonderful how adding storage in the basement creates open space upstairs.”

Holiday decorations, sports gear, paperwork and records, lawn furniture and other similar seasonal use items often clutter up garages. “But when you have smart storage in your basement,” Shirley explained, “you can put other things in your garage – like a car!”

Basement Renovations Deliver Impressive Homeowner Satisfaction Scores

In a report that’s sure to be of interest to Hingham homeowners, the National Association of Realtors revealed that converting the basement into a usable living space is among the most satisfying on home renovations. Every year, the National Association of Realtors shares their Remodel Impact Report, which tracks both the Joy Score and Value Recovered of many popular home upgrades.

Kitchen and bathroom renovations have long topped these reports. These rooms quickly become dated, and upgrading features and fixtures to accommodate current lifestyle trends is a mainstay of the home remodeling industry. Basement renovations, on the other hand, are a relatively new phenomenon. While homeowners have always considered finishing the basement, it’s only with today’s convenient basement finishing systems that more and more people are beginning to avail themselves of all the possibilities.

Converting the basement into additional living space is an always popular option, in Hingham and throughout the region, because children are living at home longer than ever before and need distinctly separate living spaces. This can also be of interest to aging parents.

Of course, additional living space isn’t the only option for your Hingham basement. Some homeowners opt to create their own private gyms or home theaters in what was their basement. Many families use this opportunity to increase the amount of storage space available to them, which is used for everything from out-of-season sports gear to holiday decorations. Entrepreneurial types have been known to have their basements converted into a home office.

According to the survey, basement renovation achieved a 9.4 on the 1-10 Joy Scale, and recovered 69% of their value. That means they’re a smart choice for the Hingham homeowner.

A Boston Basement Finishing Contractor Who Listens

“When I first came up with the idea of transforming our Boston basement into a home office for my business, the contractor laughed at me,” Charlaine said. “I mean, ha-ha, right in my face. He told me the space was too dark, that it would never stay dry, and besides, what was I going to do about the furnace?” She shook her head. “The whole thing was so insulting that I actually gave up on my idea for a while.”

Then Charlaine saw what a Boston basement finishing company did in her friend’s home. “They’re both fitness fanatics,” she explained, “and they wanted their own home gym. So they had one built in their basement. Now, I have less than no interest in a gym, but I was definitely interested in having my basement transformed. I said to them, “You have to tell me who did this!”

The experience Charlaine had meeting with the Boston basement finishing contractor was much different. “It turns out that working with a company that specializes in transforming basements is a much better experience than trying to talk a general contractor into working on your basement. There’s a special skill set involved in installing flooring, walls, and lighting in the basement,” she explained. “Plus there are specific products used to stop mold and mildew from becoming an issue.”

Even more than the expertise, Charlaine valued the fact that her Boston basement finishing contractor really listened to her. “He didn’t tell me anything was impossible. Instead, he really delved into how I wanted to use the space, and what would make it work well for me. What a refreshing change!” Today, Charlaine spends three or four days a week working out of her basement office. “I certainly don’t miss the commute to the office,” she said, “and having this bright, airy office appear out of what was a cramped, dark basement was the best thing that could have happened to this space.”

Don’t Put Your Dreams On Hold!

“My Mother always wanted to paint,” Tina said. “But there was never any space for her, never any time – between the family and the shop and taking care of my Dad, a whole lifetime slipped away. Before she knew it she was in her eighties, and then she was gone. After we buried her, we were cleaning out her house and in her bedroom closet I found all these boxes of paint and brushes and stacks of canvases – things she’d planned to use and never did.” Tina took a deep breath. “So I signed up for a painting class. To keep her dream alive.”

Tina’s Boston home is on the small side, a situation complicated by the fact she has two children and her husband runs a business out of the home. “So if I was going to paint, I needed a place to be uninterrupted. That’s what gave me the idea of having the basement finished and turning that space into a studio.

Renovating the basement to serve as an art studio or other creative work space is an increasingly popular option in Boston. Painters, quilters, artists and crafters all need open space to do their favorite things; basements are chronically underutilized spaces in many homes. “Our basement had the usual things – the furnace and whatnot – and a few boxes of old papers. Once the basement finishing company put the walls up and the floor in it looked like an entirely new space,” Tina explained. “So bright and airy – I couldn’t wait to get in there and set up my easel.” Her first few paintings don’t exactly look like something you’d find in a gallery, “But I’ve had a lot of fun,” Tina said, “and I think that’s what Mom would have wanted.”

Your Top Questions About Basement Refinishing: Answered!

As Boston’s top basement refinishing company, we hear a lot of questions from homeowners considering transforming their underused basement space into comfortable, functional rooms. Here are some of the top inquiries:

#1: I’m worried my basement is so damp that mold & mildew will grow on any new walls or floors. Can you help?

Absolutely! When we work on a home, we use our innovative basement finishing system to create walls and floors that are both mold and mildew resistant. These aren’t the two-by-four and drywall walls you may be used to: these organic building materials are a feast for the nasty spores that turn into mold and mildew. Instead, after we’re done, you can enjoy your new basement knowing mold and mildew aren’t a concern for you.

#2: If you guys handle the basement walls and floors for us, do you know someone who can do the plumbing and electrical work?

We absolutely do – because we do the entire basement renovation job ourselves. Customer service is our top priority, and we think there’s nothing more frustrating than having to track down six or seven different professionals just to renovate your basement. Our total renovation packages mean all you have to do is show up and enjoy your new space – stress free and simple!

#3: We’ve heard horror stories about basement remodeling companies that quote one price, start the job, and then suddenly announce everything’s going to cost a whole lot more. Is that something we have to worry about if we choose you?

There are some bad apple contractors who do the best they can to give our industry a bad name. But we’re not like that! We guarantee our contracted price. You’re not going to pay any more than you agreed to pay for contracted items and labor. Sometimes homeowners decide to make changes to their plan mid-project; if that happens, we get everything in writing and let you know how much the new cost will be. Sometimes homes have unsuspected structural problems or other issues: in those instances, our commitment is to keep you fully informed and let you know what your options are before moving forward. There are never any financial surprises when you choose Kaks Basement Finishing & Design!
