Finishing a basement in Norwell, Massachusetts, isn’t just about creating extra space—it’s about doing it the right way. Homeowners on the South Shore know that our climate, soil conditions, and historic homes can create unique challenges when it comes to basements. Done incorrectly, a basement remodel can lead to moisture issues, mold growth, and wasted investment. Done correctly, it adds lasting comfort, beauty, and value to your home.

At Impressive Basements Boston (KAKS Basement Finishing & Design), we specialize in turning damp, unfinished spaces into healthy, energy-efficient living areas designed to last. Here’s why finishing your basement properly matters for Norwell homeowners:

1. Moisture & Mold Protection

Basements in Norwell are especially prone to dampness. Using traditional materials like drywall, wood framing, or fiberglass insulation often leads to rot and mold.

2. A Healthier Home Environment

A poorly finished basement can affect indoor air quality throughout your home. Our finishing systems are designed to resist mold and allow walls to breathe, creating a healthier space for your family while reducing allergens and odors.

3. Year-Round Comfort & Efficiency

With superior insulation and moisture-control systems, our finished basements feel warm in the winter and cool in the summer. You’ll enjoy a comfortable space while also lowering your home’s energy costs.

4. Added Living Space & Home Value

From family rooms and playrooms to gyms, offices, or in-law suites, a professionally finished basement adds functional living space that increases your home’s resale value in Norwell’s competitive housing market.

For growing families on the South Shore—from Cohasset to Scituate and Marshfield to Plymouth—space is often at a premium. Finishing your basement offers a smart, versatile solution that not only adds living space but also boosts comfort, value, and functionality.

1. Expand Your Living Space, Not Your Footprint

Whether you’re dreaming of a kid-friendly play area, a home gym, or an in-law suite, a finished basement transforms underutilized space into valuable rooms. It’s an opportunity to “add additional living space while increasing home value” without changing your home’s footprint .

2. A Smart Financial Move

Basement remodels deliver one of the highest returns on investment in Massachusetts—among the best in New England . In fact, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value analysis, homeowners recoup roughly 74% of their investment when selling .

3. Built with the Right Materials for Lasting Durability

KAKS specializes in basement systems designed to handle moisture-prone environments. Their materials are drywall-free, wood-free, and fiberglass-free—eliminating mold and mildew risk and offering long-term durability . The advanced wall systems are waterproof, dent-resistant, mold-proof, and come with a transferable lifetime warranty .

4. Comfort Meets Eco-Conscious Design

With eco-friendly insulation and wall panels made from recycled materials like soda bottles, KAKS’s finishing system breathes, resists mold, and supports home theater sound quality (up to 85% noise reduction) . Plus, their vinyl plank flooring is 100% waterproof and maintenance-free—ideal for busy family life .

5. Stress-Free Process & Financing Support

The process is designed for convenience: completed in weeks (unless you add a bathroom), clean and dust-free, with all needed trades—from electrical to finishes—handled by one team . And with simple, flexible financing options (including zero-interest and “same-as-cash” plans), KAKS helps make the renovation both accessible and painless .

6. Designed for Real Life

For busy South Shore families, having extra space for movie nights, homework zones, home gyms, or entertaining—without the stress of adding onto the house—is transformative . And with a company deeply rooted in the community since 2007, you can expect honest communication and craftsmanship that fits your lifestyle .

⸻

A finished basement doesn’t just create extra square footage—it creates a space that grows with your family, improves daily life, and makes long-term financial sense. On the South Shore, where space and value go hand in hand, investing in your basement is a decision that pays dividends—for years to come.

With a very busy February vacation week ahead of us and three kids having their own separate space to play in and enjoy, we do not know why we didn’t do this project sooner!
We currently own our home in Westwood and it has served us very nicely. We bought the home several years ago with plans in the back of our mind to renovate the basement. My wife and I work during the day, everyday; so although this was an idea and something we knew we wanted to move forward with the timing never really seemed to make sense to us. After years and years of pushing it off, we finally scheduled a time to meet with several basement finishing companies and were ready to pull the trigger.
After researching and comparing designs, options, material quality, durability, and style, a week after we received all of our quotes back, we decided to move forward with KAKS Basement Finishing and Design based out of Hanover, MA.
Everything we asked for they delivered upon. It was that simple. Steve (the owner) made the process simple and easy for us while his team worked diligently to complete the space for our family!
This space was designed originally for added living space and some clothing storage, but has morphed into the most enjoyable space in our home for us but also for our kids. We have a couch and TV, but also a carpeted area where our son and his friends play knee hockey. Our daughter (almost 17) hosts her group of friends frequently.
My wife and I had always though we should wait for the ‘right time’ and push it off because we always were always so busy, but the truth is, the space has been so usable and helpful to our family life that we wish we hadn’t waited so long. After going through the process, our only regret is truly that we waited so long. If you are in the market for a basement, please, do not wait! It is the best decision we have made to improve our home.

Finishing the basement in our Milton MA home has been on our list to-do’s for quite some time now. While we were in the process of shopping and researching, we knew exactly what we were looking for out of the currently unused basement space. My husband and I were looking for a company that specializes in finishing basements and could give us the look we were looking for in a new finished basement. It was important for us to have the same look as the rest of the house with walls, ceilings and flooring that matched the look of the other walls, ceilings and floors in our home. A livable space that would add value to our home (certainly not de-value the home), that provide a return on our investment if we are to sell the house down the line, and serve us and our (expanding family) well for years to come with comfort and style. We often find ourselves hosting friends and family frequently so it was important guests would be able to gather in this space.

After comparing basement companies around the area (Boston/South Shore), and getting multiple quotes, it was clear that when we came across KAKS Basement Finishing and Design that they were able to meet all of our criteria and in some ways they exceeded our criteria! From start to finish, the team at KAKS were easy to work with, transparent with what was getting done and when, and their professionalism impressed us! The owner was very knowledgeable about the high quality materials that he would be installing into our home and answered all of our (many) questions with confidence.

Now living in the space and the kids having multiple playdates with their friends for almost one full year, it looks as great as it did on the first day it was installed. Knowing that the materials will not deteriorate and mold & mildew or flooding will never be an issue
gives us peace of mind. Their warranties are unbeatable, their customer service is unbeatable, and they have our seal of approval! Anyone who is in the market for a finished basement should look no further than KAKS Basement Finishing and Design! Believe me I will be promoting them all over social media!

WHAT DOES BASEMENT FINISHING LOOK LIKE IN 2017?

What makes a great finished basement?

If you are a nanny YOU need a finished basement! Let me tell you why!

Hi my name is Debby and I am a full time mom / nanny! I work out of my home and it always seems to be a disaster! My house always seems to look like a daycare and that the toddlers took over and now rule my castle! I love having company on the weekends and it just seems like I have to spend an entire day to clean my house to have a glass of wine with my girlfriends! Now that winter is approaching and the kids will mostly be in the house. I asked myself, what I can do to separate the Nanning life from my personal life. Then it hit me, as the toy dinosaur came flying across the room and nailed me in the head!!! I have a huge unfinished basement that is just a big empty wasted space! Let’s finish the basement. Living in New England on the South shore I went online in search of Basement Finishing companies in my area! I found a company called KAKS Home Improvement Services and continued looking further into them. Their website is www.impressivebasmentsboston.com . Before reading any further, if you are considering remodeling or refinishing you basement STOP and go visit their website now!! They seemed to have EVERYTHING I was looking for! I continued doing my research and reading more facts they had on their website. Something I came across which was news to me, was that there are many factors that need to be considered when finishing a basement in New England. Such as Humidity in the summer and flooding in the winter! These are huge culprits in New England that contribute to mold and mildew! BUT what I didn’t know is that the only way these nasty things can grow in your basement is if you have the wrong materials down there for them to breed off of!!! Finishing a basement out of materials like wood studs, paper drywall, and carpet ( everything I thought a finished basement was made out of) all harvest a beautiful home for mold and mildew to breathe in on a nice summer morning YUCK !! So the thought of this basement project being cheap went right out the window. Which I am okay with if I am getting quality over a cheap quote! So KAKS Basement Finishing was explaining to me their basement wall system, that is specifically design for basements in New England. They explained that having a dehumidifier is a key factor to keeping your basement air dry! After that I was informed the benefits of a fresh air exchange unit! That sold me right there!!! Constantly having a fresh air flow is perfect for a space with a bunch of germ breeding stinky toddler’s lol!!! So I recommend doing your research and getting all the RIGHT information when thinking about a basement finishing project! After I decided to move forward I met with the owner Steve at my home! He was very friendly and understanding and took the time to help me envision my project every step of the way. We ended up designing the perfect spot for me and my little tots to hang all day and not have to step foot upstairs!!! We designed an open layout with a large play area for all the toys. Then on one side of the room there is a kitchenette area with a refrigerator and sink and a small table and chairs for snack and lunch time! Can you say easy clean up! We also added a small half bath which is very necessary! Then finally, we added a small room to the side with a TV and a bunch of bean bags for movie and story time (my favorite)! I couldn’t have asked for a better finished space for myself and my little kiddies! Now it doesn’t only feel like my work and personal life are separate! It feels like I have a professional work space/ home office! No more stepping on Legos or cleaning up mac and cheese off the kitchen table or pulling toys out of the couch just to have company over! All thanks to KAKS Basement Finishing and Design! It wasn’t cheap but now it feels like another level of my home and a safe environment for my kids! NOT a big empty smelly space anymore! What a great investment! I am one happy nanny and my kids love the finished space even more!

“I want someone to finish my basement, but I don’t want the basic, put-up-walls-and-leave kind of basement finishing company. I want someone to come in my house, and tell me what they really can do with my basement, upscale design, a friendly, comfortable meeting. Please someone share your ideas with me, what are my options?!” exclaimed Marc.
While talking with my old friend Marc last month at the Hanover Starbucks.. he filled me in on the family, and about having a few basement finishers to the house.
I had to pass onto him that I knew of a local South Shore basement remodeling contractor from up the street that focuses on custom building. “It seems they range from specialty high-end custom stuff to simpler designs, depending on what you want, they can do it.” I said. Marc repeated, “I really want the mold and mildew proof quality – and custom look I want, I want a designer to talk to, teach me something that I don’t know.”
~
Now let’s fast forward to Halloween night, I bumped into Marc with the kids in the neighborhood out trick or treating. “The basement’s done, dude! You gotta come over and check this mancave out!” Marc was pumped about it, and now I was too.
“When should I stop over?” I asked.
“Game day, bro.”
”The kids have their own unique playroom entrance and tv, and me and the wife have a huge built-in, tv room with crazy new lighting, you just gotta see it to believe you’re in a basement. It’s nicer than my upstairs! I could not be happier with the finished product. Dude, the Patriots are on next Sunday.”
“Right on!” said I. (I couldn’t be happier either) “See you then!”
GAME ON.

Basement Finishing on the South Shore, remodeling extra basement space into a usable area is becoming more and more popular. My friend and homeowner Meredith from Hanover was looking to refinish her basement into a new office and extra bedroom. She had a few companies out to give her free estimates…
“Not all basement finishing companies are the same”, says Meredith.
Meredith told me about long, drawn-out home consultations with basement finishing companies that went on for hours, with pressure to sign before the salesperson left. She wasn’t impressed with their tactics or style of presentation.
She had a local basement finishing company from the South Shore come out, and she told me all about it. “They were quick with measurements, no pressure, no sales tactics, actually walked me through with design ideas. I really liked their vision. A few days later I received a price – honestly, it was a little higher than expected.”
Meredith confirmed, “I felt good about the price, knowing that the quality of the materials was much better, and the level of customer service I was receiving – great communication from booking my appointment to the layout of my basement – it was a much better experience than the other companies.”
It’s important to feel no pressure, without lengthy presentations. Materials that will last a lifetime, this was a must for Meredith. She got exact pricing, a great design, no pressure to sign, no wasted time, with no negotiating.
Meredith reminded me, “also knowing that the basement remodelers were from this area really helped to secure my decision.”

Do I Really Have To Worry About Finishing My Basement With DRY-WALL – Wood, Fiberglass insulation – panels And Why ?
If you have been thinking about finishing your basement it is important to have a good understanding about the basement environment, here you will find facts about the proper use of building materials, and why using organic & moisture sensitive materials like dry-wall, wood, paper and fiberglass insulation – panels in a basement are all food sources for mold growth. And due to their inferior properties they are the lest effective solution when applied in an environment like a basement. Mold is a major concern & needs a source to grow, here are five ingredients necessary for mold growth (food source, air, moisture, suitable temperature, and a surface to grow on) below explains the common problems with leaking, moisture and high humidity. And why organic – moisture sensitive materials are hazardous and will become damaged when used in a basement.
“It has been documented that at least “ 98% of all sub-surface basement areas will leak, at some point in their life.” There can be many reasons for a damp or leaky basement, and they all add up to problems for you as a homeowner, if not corrected. Actual water leakage should not be confused with the high relative humidity typically found in basements. Both leaking and high levels of humidity will destroy inferior building materials. If your house has a basement, then basement water leakage and excess basement humidity levels along with the installation of improper building materials are major contributors to mold growth in your home. Below are examples of the damage that happens when moisture is trapped between the foundation wall and the finished basement wall using dry-wall, wood, paper faced fiberglass insulation allowing mold to grow unnoticed. Mold growth in walls of the home is a serious health concern. Long-standing moisture problems can lead to termite infestation and decay, resulting in structural damage to the house. Thats why its important to avoid materials that DO NOT BELONG in the basement. Fiberglass insulation when wet acts as a sponge and will retain water from flooding and humidity, falling apart and loosing its insulative R-value & allowing mold growth. The manufacturer of this product developed a basement wall finishing system using a fiberglass panel with a fabric covering and promotes it to be used in the basement but recommends storing fiberglass in a dry place? this is true for drywall HENCE the name DRY-WALL.they also recommend storing it in a dry place, why would you use it in a basement?

Mashpee basement renovation

This finished basement in Mashpee Massachusetts was finished about 5 years ago using wood studs, fiberglass insulation & drywall.

Here’s the story.

The homeowner called us and asked if we would be interested in taking a look at her basement. After our conversation we decided to go to Mashpee Massachusetts to evaluate the space. During the evaluate I met with the homeowner and her parents. She explained that they would like for the parents to be able to utilize the existing space in the basement. Because they were getting older and the house that they are currently living in is getting to be just too much, and the homeowner would feel a lot more comfortable knowing that her parents were with her and she would be able to care for them. Their initial ideas was to use the existing space and maybe just configure it a little bit different adding a bathroom a Living room etc but they had concerns. (Mold) the homeowner explained that she had the space built about five years ago using a general contractor, after just a short time she never used the space because she complained about slight headaches and could smell a musty moldy smell. She went on to explain that she did not feel comfortable having her elderly parents living in a space with these conditions, so how do we fix it? I explained to her that the materials used in the basement by the general contractor were the wrong materials to use, and the only way to get rid of it would be to start over and rip it all out. This is not what she wanted to hear, she was devastated, I spent all that money with the general contractor and now you’re telling me that it is no good? As we concluded I told her that I would come up with a price to refinish the space with everything that she asked for. About 3 days later I gave her the price immediately she asked if we could meet again. I said sure not a problem would you like to meet in our showroom in Hanover Massachusetts? She replied with yes that would be great. As it turns out her parents are from Hingham Massachusetts the next town over how convenient. After reviewing the layout, pricing and materials they decided that the best thing to do was to start over from scratch & move forward with Kaks. They signed on the spot.
Utilizing space to increase value of homes in New England
Written by: Tom FaunceProduced by: Sean O’Reilly

Basement finishing is a home renovation method that has become increasingly popular as homeowners seek to increase the value of their home by utilizing every square inch. For nearly 10 years, KAKS Basement has been the leading source in the Greater Boston area for basement finishing and organizing. With top-quality workmanship and a professional, personal touch, KAKS converts unusable space into a new level of living.
Founded in 2007 by Steve Sweeney, KAKS maintains dedicated teams comprised of qualified licensed professionals with many years of experience. These skilled craftsmen have helped KAKS to establish a reputation for completing projects on time and budget. “Our goal is to direct, manage and work closely with our installations crews and electricians to determine our customer’s specific needs while keeping their budget a priority,” says Sweeney. “We believe in open communication as a key to achieving the desired results.”
A full-service company
KAKS is a one-stop shop. With its talented and experienced crews, KAKS is able to see every project through from design to completion. In addition to basement finishing, KAKS provides full basement clean-out services as well. Customers do not need to concern themselves with emptying junk and clutter and KAKS is a full-service company. By providing all labor and hauling the company is able to maintain low overhead and pass the savings along to the customer. Once the project is complete, KAKS will rearrange any items or furniture for its customers by performing a full cleaning of the space, leaving it spotless.
In all of its basement renovations, KAKS uses Impressive Basement Systems, which has been utilized in the industry since 1972. The 100 percent eco-basement finishing system has been installed all over the country and was featured on the A&E hit show Flipping Boston. Along with proven durability, advantages of the system include water and stain repellant, removable panels for easy access, noise control and high thermal insulation. KAKS also uses 100 percent waterproof vinyl flooring planks with realistic textures in wood or stone and also offers lighting and ceiling options. Customers can complete their space with new lighting, detailed suspension ceilings for easy access from top names like USG and Armstrong or a plastered finish ceiling.
With mold and mildew a concern for most homeowners in New England, KAKS uses wallboard products that are specifically designed to inhibit mold and mildew growth. Unlike ordinary wallboard or other common building materials, these specially treated selections create an environment unsuitable for mold to survive. Prior to beginning any renovation, KAKS will thoroughly inspect each basement for signs of moisture penetration, which could be through foundation cracks, window seals or other vulnerable points.
Maintaining a personal touch
With its full-service approach and the niche market that KAKS maintains, the company has been fortunate to not only survive through the economic downturn but to thrive as well. “We really weren’t affected by the housing market collapse,” says Sweeney. “What we witnessed was people wanting to take advantage of getting the full value from their home. We saw some of the luxury builds decrease a bit but not by much.”
With an influx of space-utilizing work, KAKS has managed to maintain steady, manageable growth as a company. “I don’t want to become a company with a corporate feel,” says Sweeney. “I want KAKS to continue to be a company that runs a tight operation, and has people that want to do business with us because they know that they are going to receive personal attention. We remain very aware of that when it comes to growth.”
With its attention to detail and personal touch, Kaks Basement Finishing & Design remains a leader as a premier New England basement finisher.
